I used to play with Barbie dolls as a young girl, I'm sure most of us did, she was the "it" doll for decades... but now.. after viewing the Black Canary Barbie.. I have decided that my daughter will not have the option of playing with "Barbie"(s)... and to think you will actually see this doll at your local Wal-Mart...
This was what was written at BarbieCollector.com:
DC Comics super heroine Black Canary is known for her martial-arts skills and her "Canary Cry" — a high powered, sonic scream with the ability to shatter objects and incapacitate villains. Barbie® doll captures this super heroine's essence, wearing her signature black "leather" bodysuit and jacket, patterned tights, and black boots with "golden" details. Long honey blond hair with bangs and black gloves with "golden" details complete the look.
I can understand that dolls are made due to upcoming films but dressed like this? She looks like one of the prostitutes we'd find down by OV (if your in Hampton Roads, you'll know what I'm talking about), I surely don't want my daughter playing with a doll dressed soo "hookerish".... It does state for the Adult Collector...ages 14 and up but this will be seen in the same section as all the other Barbie dolls in your local Wal-Mart this September... and I can already hear "Mommy, Mommy, I want that one..." then we have to explain the reason(s) why we can't have that doll sweetie.
Some MORAL options for young girls today are:

The American Girl Dolls (I've always dreamed of owning one of these beautiful dolls).
They have the classic historical dolls you might remember: Samantha, Addy, Kirsten, Molly, Josephina, they have added many more since I was a young girl.

Since 2001 they launced "Girl of the Year", Just Like You (customize your very own doll down to hair color, eye color, and fashion), the Bitty Baby line (including the new "Twins") , and also 2 fluffy friends, Coconut & Licorice!
Also each doll has their very own book series and even cd's now so what better way to get your child more involved with reading as well! The accessories are such an added bonus, soo many to choose from your child will never get bored! The dolls run anywhere from $95 and up depending on the amount of accessories, books, etc you'd like to add to your collection!

The Karito Kids has a very cute line of dolls each from a different country and each doll purchased helps another child, how cool is that? They also have a book that comes with each doll, they are bit pricey as well but these days I find you have to pay more for quality, am I right? I especially like the newest doll Piper from Australia, now if they were to make a girl from Japan I'd be in Heaven! They do have: Zoe from the USA, Lulu from Kenya, Pita from Mexico, Gia from Italy and Ling from China!
I'm sure you've heard of Fancy Nancy by now, if not from the book series then from seeing the red haired girl carried at Target($39.99)! She is full of joie de vivre (that’s French for ‘full of fun’) and ready to go anywhere and everywhere! I also found a bit pricier collection (maybe for Mommy's who are doll collectors) of Nancy , HERE. As a Mommy & Daddy to Baby Helana and a Little sister Helana to Big Brother present for Gabriel , I will present my children with the Bitty Twins, I figured this might help the transition for Gabriel when Helana arrives in September, also save me a bit of money (LOL) cause the Bitty Twins are the price of 1 regular American Girl Doll,
My son actually likes stuffed animals and even dolls! For my choice on the twins I'll order one that looks like my son and we will do some guesswork for Helana's!
What do you think? Is the presenting of a gift from a newborn baby to a sibling a good idea? Has it worked for your family? How old was your child when the new baby arrived? What dolls do you let your children play with?

I'm with you. Miss Pea won't be able to play with Barbies, or Bratz dolls. Those bratz look like little hookers if you ask me!
ReplyDeleteAs for the presents...it's a good idea. Our son was almost 8 when his sister arrived. He felt really left out at the baby shower, but thankfully I had many kind people who also brought something for him. We also purchased I'm a Big Brother shirt for him to wear to the hospital and I went shopping before the baby arrived and purchased a bunch of little things for John. Bubble bath, a new football, a videogame. I put them all in a gift sack, and added a card. When he came up to the hospital after Pea was born, she gave him the present. He was so surprised that the baby would be so thoughtful. It really touched his heart. Mine too! They are so close!
