I am blessed to have the opportunity thanks to The Parent Reviewers to review "Sikulu & Harambe by the Zambezi River, An African version of the Good Samaritan Story". Be sure to check out Sikulu.com for more on the book, play some games, watch some videos, and even leave your own review.
My views:
Broaden your child's horizons with this first in a series (actual folktale) that explores different countries in Africa. You and your child can go on colorfully illustrated mission filled adventure while following Sikulu a friendly spider and Harambe a very helpful Hippo.
The story unfolds in the village of Sioma where Sikulu & Harambe are at the river taking a drink of water when suddenly an older lady has an accident and is in need of help. While Sikulu & Harambe are on their way to save the day despite the fact of Sikulu's fear of water, many animals in the village who pass along the river make excuses to avoid helping the woman.
While very similar to the Bible's Parable of the Good Samaritan, Sikulu & Harambe's version is based on an actual African folktale. This book teaches us about a real life situation, the reactions of others, and the rewards for their actions. Its a great way to teach your children about kindness all while learning about a new culture as well. I believe this book is just as much for adults as it is geared towards children, we can all learn something from the kind actions and reactions of others in this book. ~smile~
Special:
At the end of this book you will be able to discuss the moral of the story, understand the words used in the book with the the glossary of terms, learn a bit of history about Zambia, and read descriptions of the animals and celebrations that was in the story.
