From Nui Island:
Set upon the exotic paradise of Nui Island, three new friends - Big B, Sam, and Nalu - seek out adventures, solve mysteries, and right injustices to people and their island. And just like many of the difficult problems facing people on our own Nui (Big) Island called Earth, the solutions to our challenges just might be best led by kids.
Who else has the wacky ideas, the team-work, or the energy needed to change the future? Empowered kids make a better world.
Nui believes that nothing can inspire change like a good story. The power of Nui Island Eco-Logical Adventures lies in the hands of those who read it...and those who share it.
Nui is committed to making a difference to kids and giving back. Nui donates 50% of profits to charities that empower kids to improve physical, social, and environmental health.
From the sale of each copy of Curse of the Bone Pirates, Nui donates $1 to support Healthy Child Healthy World and Surfers for Cetaceans. Check them out.
My Review:
You start of with "Big B" aka Brett from Chicago who has to suddenly come to the aide of his Grandfather in Nui Island. As soon as he gets to the island, he discovers a whole new world of mystery, new friends, the Curse of the Bone Pirates and new discoveries about how he and his friends can make a difference in a very eco-logical way!
This book is an adventure from the get go, I couldn't put it down! Also to help the reader understand some of the Polynesian and Spanish words used in the book , there is a very helpful and informative glossary!
This adventure is not only for boys and girls, I believe there is something in this book for everyone, including adults! Its packed full of eco-logical fun promoting a fun way to get you and your children interested in the environment around them! I also enjoyed the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, you can see more of the original art from the book here.
A bit about the Authors:
B. T. Hope
Little things you do can have a Nui impact. When you come together and cooperate with another, you both can share the most exciting vision of the future: Hope.
Brian Machovina has worked in many mission-driven organizations, driven by his lifetime passion for the environment. As a co-founder of Nui, he helps develop food, beverage, and media projects intended to empower children to improve their physical, social, and environmental health. He has imported and marketed community-grown organic foods and rainforest products, co-developed a charity that preserved rainforests and supported indigenous communities in Latin America, and directed a coalition of organizations that protected California waters from pollution. Prior, he was an ecologist studying, teaching, and performing research on wetland and marine ecology in South Florida where he was fortunate enough to hold in his hands everything from rattlesnakes and alligators to mysterious amphiumas and pygmy sperm whales. He lives in Los Angeles where he runs Nui with his high school sweetheart wife, Eileen McHale, and their good friend David Marshall.
Tina DiCicco is a designer, illustrator and storyteller whose work you may discover in future children’s books and animation, including Ticklebug Farm, Ticklebug Zoo, Mrs. Topsy and Mr. Turvy, Polka Dot, Applepotamus Pie, and Noodlehead. A graduate in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design, Tina has worked as a professional artist for 17 years. She has designed everything from packaging and catalogs to logos and displays for active-lifestyle companies such as Nui, CamelBak Hydration Systems, Buff Multifunctional Headwear, The Yellow Rose Foundation for Type 1 Diabetes, and even the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, yes… NASA. Tina’s designs are literally out of this world (35 million miles away) on Mars. She even signed the Atlas V rocket, enhanced by her logo, before lift-off. When she’s not going into orbit for her clients or handling her responsibilities as a full-time mom, Tina builds homemade fountains, creates whimsical garden sculptures, and escapes to Nui Island, her favorite place on Earth. She resides in Sonoma County with her two monster-cats, a patient husband and two brilliant daughters.
Be sure to check out the Nui Website for more cool information on the book, character blogs, podcasts, and much more on how you can make a difference!
